Alright, I’m not dead yet and not done blogging! Certainly the release of a new album is an occasion to come out of blog retirement. Kudos to embracing covers as a valid expression of art. I was loving the singles that he was teasing us with in the lead-up to the official February 24 release. I enjoyed the sultry classicism of “All About the Boy” and naked vulnerability of “Ordinary World.” I was less sure about the rollicking hystrionics of “Holding Out for a Hero.” Didn’t hate it. Didn’t love it.

These are confessions of the unrequited love, lust, and passion, of a 16 year old girl trapped in a seventy year old body.

Xena sees him most days, feeling her temperature rise as he approaches and hopes she’s not visibly blushing. She leans on the counter to steady herself, and prays he has something happy to report, so she can see the azure eyes sparkle, and elicit that smile to showcase the dimples in the corners of his sweetly bowed lips. If he takes off the cap and runs his fingers through his golden locks, well then it might be a 911.

We all know Adam has a superpower. And nothing has been more frustrating than to see him shunt it aside in pursuit of glittery baubles that are not in his wheelhouse. Back in the primoridal times, we suspect that Adam got the notion that to succeed commercially in music, you needed to own the copyright. So he decided he needed to be a singer-songwriter. Now, we applaud and support everyone in following their creative muse! But when someone has an ultra-rare gift—one that he himself admits makes him feel most alive—and squanders it, we would like to have a few words…

Adam doesn’t need us anymore

If anyone is still following this blog, you may have wondered where we’ve gone. (Or not….) We are still here, watching and enjoying Adam Lambert, but we haven’t felt compelled to write for some time. Why is that? It’s all his fault, of course. The planetary gravitational force of Adam has set our life trajectories into new orbits, which have consumed much of our energies and attention. For this, we are forever grateful. But more than that, Adam doesn’t need us anymore.

Adam Lambert is now, officially, declaratively and authentically, a grown-ass man. From his gradual take-over of American Idol to his latest single, he has what? Matured? Ripened? I’ve spent days trying to choose the right word for the process we have not just witnessed, but lived, since 2009, albeit a bit ahead of our Wonder Boy. We know that success cannot be measured by airplay and I think Adam is finally there too.

Adam at Venetian PublicityHow miraculous to see Adam back where he belongs, strutting in front of an enthusiastic throng of live bodies during his current run at The Venetian in Las Vegas. We couldn’t join the in-person revelry but loved the vicarious thrill as friends shared videos and social media posts. After the long, pandemic drought, it must have been like plunging into the cool waters of an oasis. Or, since this is Adam F Lambert, a smoldering cauldron of spicy fun, with a little green absinthe of love’s bitter disappointments drizzled in.

The show opens with sexy Halloween-themed For Your Entertainment and Evil in the Night, followed by two all-time favorite covers, Ring of Fire and Marry the Night (I believe the first time he’s done this now-legendary Glee performance live). Staying with the Halloween theme, the mood shifts through Voodoo, Ready to Run, to the desolate Ghost Town. Adam then twists his vocal coils around us as only he can with sexy-angsty Running (wolves!), Chokehold, Sleepwalker, Mad World, and Can’t Let You Go. Just when he’s wrung every tear out of our eyes, he is back on the troubled romance market with After Hours, Roses, Love Don’t, On the Moon, and of course Whataya Want From Me. And what the public wants from Adam is some Queen, and so he gives us Stone Cold Crazy, Dragon Attack, and Another One Bites the Dust. (Not my personal Queen favorites; I wonder what goes into the calculus of determining which Queen songs he can perform…). The show ends, fittingly, with Adam reclaiming his own voice with Superpower and Overglow.  

One could say that Adam has pulled off a little voodoo with his career! The magnetic pull of his voice and charisma are still very much alive. I thought these lyrics from Jimi Hendrix’s Voodoo Child were fitting:

Say, I make love to you in your sleep,
And lord knows you felt no pain
‘Cause I’m a million miles away
And at the same time I’m right
Here in your picture frame
‘Cause I’m a voodoo child

Proud of Adam

Have I told you how proud we should all be about the Hero of Our Magnificent Obsession? I think it occurred to me when the Obamas invited Adam to participate in their video project, We the People. Curating an event to mark the Stonewall riots, the seminal event of the gay revolution, he brought attention to its historical importance. He has become a true leader of the queer (as he says) community, ensuring that LGBTQ entertainers are welcomed and appreciated by everyone. And he has influenced his own fans to embrace the full panoply of entertainers and entertainment.  

Adam so believes in this cause that he established the Feel Something Foundation, raising money to be directed where it is most needed. Although some activists demanded he take the mantle of Gay Icon and leadership upon setting foot on the solo stage 12 years ago, ultimately this role came to him organically, unfolding like a butterfly emerging from his cocoon.  

He is truly multi-talented – lead singer of one of the greatest bands ever to take the stage, lofting them to new heights of popularity and success. The best cover singer of a generation; he’s on-call for tributes to some of the greatest singers and entertainers of our time: David Bowie, Cher, whom he moved to tears, George Michael, Little Big Town, Lady Gaga, Avicii, Rihanna, T-Rex, Bob Marley, and of course, all of his Idol performances. 

How many times has he appeared on magazine covers this year? How many radio and TV interviews promoting a show, a cause, a project? Style and fashion icon – a favourite for magazine spreads. He maintains his position of sexiest person alive – turning everyone he meets into a wannabe gay boy. He’s writing a live theatrical production! Charming, witty and affable, our dear Adam is a popular judge for just about any musical or Drag competition TV show – on a few continents. And more television from Glee to Rocky Horror to Moonbase 8, combining acting and singing.  

Let’s not forget, this is all world-wide and on top of a solo recording and performing career. He disappears for a few days and then he pops up on a project like the Ratatouille fundraiser or the Obama’s We the People, or Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new musical, Cinderella – all the while looking healthy, groomed and gorgeous. Any wonder we still love him madly?  

We know of a secret, musical biography in process. Can the West End or Broadway be far behind? Would we not all fly, drive, sail, swim, or surf to stand in ovation, passing our hankies to dab tears of joy, and toss flowers (rather than knickers) at his feet?  

Let us, however immodestly, take a moment to bathe in pride over Adam’s accomplishments – surely with more to come!
